Redhead Beach, Lake Macquarie

Redhead Beach is located at the northern end of a nine-mile beach in Lake Macquarie region of Newcastle. For a coastal walk, swim or riding the waves with stunning scenery, Redhead Beach is a perfect spot. The beach is known for its spectacular cliffs, rocky outcrops, and the famous shark tower. The beach is long and very spacious, giving plenty of room for activities and games.

Redhead Beach is known for its famous shark tower. The tower gave a height advantage to rescuers back in the day but now it’s a famous photographic icon and popular among visitors. The shark look-out tower at Redhead Beach is a unique example of the methods used to protect beachgoers from shark attacks before the introduction of shark meshing.

Are dogs allowed at Redhead Beach?

Dog are allowed on some areas of the beach away from the swimmers. It is not officially declared as a dog-friendly beach, however, locals and beachgoers accept dogs playing away from dedicated swimming spots.

Newcastle Horseshoe Beach is dedicated to dogs.

Is camping allowed at Redhead Beach?

Camping is allowed in some parts of the beach, check the signboards for more information.

Four-wheel driving trail

Four-Wheel Drives are allowed in Nine Mile Beach front and hind dunes between Redhead and Blacksmiths.  Three well-defined tracks have been developed, only use these access routes to the beach and do not make or use any other tracks.

You will need a valid permit to drive on the beach. Don’t forget to lower your tire pressure for sand driving and carry water, a mobile phone, a first aid kit, and appropriate recovery equipment.

There are lots of hotels, motels, and apartments near the beach. Check Redhead Beach Shack, Beachside at Redhead and Comfy Lake Retreat. These are all great places to stay and they offer a variety of facilities.

How to get there?

The best way to travel to redhead beach by car. It takes about 25 minutes to get there. Plenty of free parking spaces available at the beach car park.
